June 16, 2008 - New Hyde Park, NY Dressage Champion Gives Hope to Patients at LIJ Medical Center.
In medicine, it’s often the doctor who makes a profound impact on a patient’s life. Surgeon Allan Abramson, MD,
chairman of otolaryngology and communicative disorders at LIJ Medical Center, has improved the lives of countless
patients during his 40-plus year career. However, one of his patients, Al Guden, a throat cancer survivor of nearly
10 years, has not only inspired Dr. Abramson but instilled his love and appreciation for horses.
Mr. Guden, a Long Island businessman and owner of Hyperion Farm, Inc., in Wellington, FL, which specializes in
breeding Dutch Warmblood horses for dressage, and Lauren Sammis, a member of the gold-medal winning 2007 US
Pan American Dressage team, presented Dr. Abramson with a beautiful framed color portrait of Ms. Sammis riding
the horse, Sagacious, to commemorate the opening of LIJ’s Zucker Sinus Center and Naymark Pavilion. Dr. Abramson
proudly displayed the photograph next to a prized print of Affirm, the 1978 Triple Crown winner, which was given to
him by former New York Racing Association Commissioner Earl Mack. This place of honor had special meaning for everyone.
Over the years, Dr. Abramson developed a close friendship with Mr. Guden and his wife Judy, who died in November 2007
after a five-year battle with breast cancer. Although not a rider himself, Dr. Abramson competed at the US Olympic Trials as a
swimmer and he knew Mrs. Guden had great pride in her work with horses. “I appreciate excellence and know what it takes
to win,” he said. Dr. Abramson always joked with the Gudens that if they ever had a championship horse he had a special
place reserved on the wall next to Affirm. When Dr. Abramson proudly placed the photograph on the wall, he said, “This is
not only as a symbol of hard work, devotion and drive, but a fitting tribute to wonderful spirit of Judy Guden.”
The new $7 million, 7,000 square-foot center and pavilion provides state-of-the-art administrative and research offices
and exam rooms for the hospital’s Department of Otolaryngology and Communicative Disorders. Designed with the
patient in mind, the facility is spacious and modern and offers convenient free parking. The building is connected to
the LIJ Hearing and Speech Center, making patient visits to specialists easier and enhancing collaboration among colleagues.
The LIJ Hearing and Speech Center includes the Marvin Schein Voice Center, the Richard and Lorraine Abramson
Clinical Center and the Apelian Cochlear Implant Center.
